| There is no right or wrong answer, and it's unrelated to scale length. 1/2" to 5/8" is the usual range because it's high enough to prevent fret/board buzzing while still allowing the fret markers to be used for good intonation. However, there are plenty of instruments that do just fine with higher or lower measurements. A much more important distance is between the strings and the pickup, which has a big impact on the instrument's sound. |

I think of 3/8" as the minimum at the nut, 1/2" as mentioned by Noah is fairly common.
5/8" seems like it's a bit of overkill to me, not sure what advantage there is to that.

In my case I've made several hundred 8 string lap and console steel guitars with 1/4 thick fretboards.
The Strings are higher than 3/8-1/2 to end up with 3/8 over the fretboard.
I agree 3/8 - 1/2 is the general desired range.

I wonder if the angle of the strings coming off the nut (or bridge ) on a higher nut effects the feel and tone. It does create more tension in the string. Not sure of the physics involved, but strings going through the nut nearly flat feel looser to me.

With a 23†scale length it’s a pretty safe bet that the original poster is referring to a lap steel since a resonator with that length would be a very rare bird.
But I have a feeling you already knew that Jim. English Composition 101 - be clear and specific so that the reader doesn't have to answer a question with another question .
