My old Evans amplifier doesn't have a direct out; but, it does have an ext. speaker jack on the back.
Do you know of any direct boxes designed to take a signal directly from that quarter-inch speaker out? |

Peavey used to make a couple (3) variations of the EDI if you find one.... |

Lee,
You can't take a regular direct box and feed it with the output of your amplifier. You'll ruin the amp, which is expecting to see a 4 or 8 ohm load from the speaker.
If you want to record the output of the amp, you'll need a special/expensive output box that simulates the speaker load.

What you CAN do is plug the guitar into a direct box like the Whirlwind Director or others and run the output to your amp (1/4" jack) and recording rig/house PA (XLR balanced out).

I just remembered that I have one of these:
http://www.samsontech.com/samson/products/processors/s-class-mini/sdirect/
The input is switchable between guitar and speaker.
It looks like this may be what I need.
Perhaps one of you more tech savvy guys could look at the downloadable (is that even a word?) specs and confirm.

Should work fine, Lee, but you aren't going to get your speaker's important contribution to your sound in the direct signal. You may find it can work for you with careful EQ on the board; only one way to find out.

I (and at least one other that reported) have found the direct out on a Quilter Steelaire is actually better than using a mike for recording. Actually, I've mostly recorded steel direct for years.
The Quilter and some Peavey steel amps have an XLR out that is compensated to emulate miking a speaker. _________________ GFI Ultra Keyless S-10 with pad (Black of course) TB202 amp, Hilton VP, Steelers Choice sidekick seat, SIT Strings

I failed to mention that this would be for bandstand use, not recording. _________________ Lee, from South Texas - Down On The Rio Grande
