Nice! I use a flat pick for nonpedal, but I'm usually going for a rock/bottleneck type of sound, lots of overdrive.
I often use a combination of flat/fingerpicks for psg. |

I've used a Herco pick that is shaped like a flat-pick but fits like a thumb-pick.
You can alternate gripping it with your thumb and index finger or use it as a traditional thumb-pick. And, of course, your fingers are free for the 2 to 4 finger pick grips.
These pick come in light, medium, heavy thicknesses. |

I use a flat pick on steel as well and after 40+ years of standard guitar it feels very natural. You can definitely get things that are impossible via finger style - and the reverse is true. My personal favorite picks are Jim Dunlop Jazz IIIs and Wegan Gypsy Jazz picks. I lent my Wegan to Redd Volkaert one time and he gave it back in about 10 seconds. You either love ‘em or hate ‘em.

I like to use a flat pick sometimes on Dobro. You can get a very "Willie Nelson-ee" sound with a flat pick that is good to have in the ol' bag of tricks, especially at jams where there are multiple Dobro players.
I see some guys hold a flat pick with their thumb/index-finger and also wear one finger pick on the middle finger. |
