So I know this instrumental tune from this video (Jules Ah See from the 40s):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CPiJ1a-poBQ

I dug into it a bit deeper though, and the "My Rose of Waikiki" I can find is a completely different tune...the sheet music cover on the above video is for this other version...here's the sheet music:
https://www.loc.gov/item/ihas.100004974/

Obviously very different in melodic content...completely different tune. Here's...errr...Tiny Tim doing a heartfelt rendition:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ivmg0AbhgQ0

I'm wondering if these are two separate songs, or if the Jules tune above might even be mislabelled, possibly. EDIT, doing some youtube research...obviously not! Tons of recordings of the "Jules" version under that name.

Plot thickens..."Where Is My Rose of Waikiki", completely different tune recorded in the 20s. We now have three different compositions in play now Smile.

The tune recorded by Jules is a (Danny) Stewart - (Andy Iona) Long - Gump - Canfield collaboration.

Starts at around 27:20 Very Happy

Mahalo Jeff!

To be perfectly honest there was part of me that wondered if Andy Iona had a hand in its composition, it felt like it had that "sound" a bit. He was a genius! I wish there was more written about his life, at least than I've been able to uncover.

Ahh, it felt like it would have vocals, just the way the melody fit rhythmically with "My Rose of Waikiki" (listening now). Apparently I've neglected a lot by not listening to these Territorial Airwaves podcasts...

Wonderful tune.

Sounds like F#9 on a Rickenbacher on the Jules version ??

I believe Jules’ tuning on that recording is a D9 (with the bottom string tuned up to C#...evidenced by the strummed chord at the very end) high to low:

E
C
A
F#
E
C#

Alan Akaka mentioned this as a D9 song too! It's an interesting tuning but still a bit "unnatural" to me...so far, anyway.

A few years back fellow formulite Bill Leff tabbed this intro out for me in C6th. Works for me.Thanks again, Bill! I would have never figured this out on my own.

Hi Roy,
What tuning is this written for?
Your tab looks nice and easy to read!

Sorry.
It is C6: E-C-A-G-E-C...... H TO L
I did it several years ago for a student and as I
recall it was the Jules arrangement inspired?
