Does anybody have a hard-and-fast citation of when or where Harlan Howard gave this description of country music? I find a thousand references to him having said this, but not a single one saying when, where, to whom, etc. I'd like to cite it in a publication.
Thanks! |

Dan, a little searching reveals there are really three similar quotes that are generally associated with Harlan Howard:
Quote: |
Country music is three chords and the truth.
|
Quote: |
All you need to write a country song is three chords and the truth.
|
Quote: |
Country music ain't nothin' but three chords and the truth. |
Interestingly enough, I have a lot of books about the history and the stars of country music, and none of them even mention the quote. |

Thanks,Donny. I'm starting to think it was a phrase he uttered (probably often) that people associated with him, and that there is no published quote to cite. |
