I've been intently studying Buddy Charleton's style since I went down this PSG road, as one of my main influences (along with Day and Hughey) for wanting to learn to play this thing. At some point I stumbled across this version of Thanks A Lot. To my ear, it is just jammed with Buddy Charleton licks that set his style apart from others, and define it in an accompaniment setting - not one of him and Leon's tour deforce instrumental platforms.

That cut is fun and feels good, doesn't it . . . and BC surprised my ear pleasantly a couple of times (e.g., at 00:26).

Thanks (a lot) for posting.

It takes a lot of taste to play licks behind the vocals like that without making the whole song appear overloaded. It requires real good volume control also. Buddy sure was the master at that.

Yes Jeff. The whole thing does that to me - all his licks are just masterful - and in tune with the song itself. But yes, the one @ :26 is one of my favorites.

I didn't realize that Jeff - but he was a masterful C6 player too.

Yes Jeorge, that's why I study him. He seems to be able to play anything w/out interfering with the rest of the song.

Luckily, there are several DVDs of the old ET shows available. Buddy and Leon did some unbelievable things on their breathtaking instrumentals but it is also recommended to listen what they both did behind ET and the other vocalists. Outstanding!

Kind Regards, Walter

One thing I noticed about Buddy is his playing always sounded very articulate. Very accurate and natural sounding. It seemed to me maybe he used less reverb than others. I seem to remember when he would play using a "grip" that included lower and higher strings you could really hear all the strings so well.

You're right Walter. I 'm sure I'll never get the hot rod instros him and Leon did but, his playing behind ET is really a study in how to do that the right way. I do try to use an abbreviated version of Cool It for right hand exercises though.

Agreed Bob, articulate, accurate and natural is a very good characterization of his playing.

Charleton's stuff was so deceptively simple, often using just the A&B pedals. Yet it was so exquisitely executed that it's a treatise in the beauty of simplicity. Here's a few of my own favorites:

Buddy was like a scientist the way he would methodically go over every little detail of playing. One time I was over there and we sat and listened to a Lloyd Maines outro on a Dixie Chicks song. Was a very simple little AB pedal lick. We listened to it about 8 times while he pointed out how each note was in perfect balance and phrased just right. He was totally excited about that lick.

If you listen to Charleton's playing slowed down you hear how even the real fast stuff has a swing to it. His precision is astonishing.

I used to pass through Nashville when I was on the road and stop off at the ET record shop. I would pick up DVDs of the shows Buddy was on and bring them over to Buddy and Kay Lee's place. They hadn't seen the shows yet so we would sit and watch them while Buddy would tell stories and Kay Lee would tease him.

I really miss him.

That's great! Yes Bob, I think that attention to every detail is what sets guys like Buddy apart.

Donny, thanks very much for the examples...

Some of Buddy's passing chords on the Cal Smith tracks turn me sideways...

The whole set took me back to gradeschool.

Thanks again.
