Hi everyone, I’m a new player and I’ve read all over this site about “bar tracking” and it makes sense that the bar should be moved so that the tip is on your highest note but I can’t find any info on this: do you really use “just the tip” on the low strings? For instance, if I’m playing a single note on string 10 or 9, am I really supposed to just use the tip? That would mean I’m holding almost the whole bar in my hand for low notes which really slows me down. This thing is heavy! Thanks guys!

When I play fast runs on the 3 lowest strings I use about an inch including the tip to dig out the run.. Shocked

Here is a link to some great video of Greg Leisz playing on low strings and you can see his bar technique.

You should also experiment with different bar weights and sizes. Some players even use a different bar depending on the type of song.

Thanks for the replies! They were enlightening. I’ve got to practice my bar technique then. That video was especially enlightening. He’s really holding that thing. I’ve just been letting the strings hold the bar.
