Over the years I've seen many questions on how to keep your picks from sliding off. I've always licked the tips of my fingers (I know it sound bad) and it really locks them in.
Well I finally found a video of Buddy doing it. Take a look on this YouTube video.

All spit aside, that is such a great video. Laney is so professional and a great singer, and then having Buddy mesmerizing the audience. Very cool. |

Sorry if I am side-tracking the spit topic Ron, but I couldn't help but notice what looks like a Line-6 POD effects processor associated with the PSG to Buddy's right (resting on a stand). Watch from 1:28 - 1:34. Interesting to me at least, but makes some sense. Has Chrous, Reverb, etc.
More info on this unit if interested:

I noticed that too.
Usually he just has a Boss DD2 or DD3 sitting on a chair next to him. |

I love that video, watched it a hundred times. Another really, really amazing thing about it, the FIRST sound Buddy's steel makes after he gets settled in is the first note of the intro.
Many of us sit down, turn everything on, get our picks on, and play an unconscious lick to make sure everything's on and our tone and volume are set right.
My kids surprised me once and said "how come you always play the same thing after you turn your bass amp on?" I know what my unconscious lick is on bass, but I need to go back to my band tapes to see what I do on steel.
Here's an "audio" poll question:
1). How many of play an unconscious lick to make sure everything's on and our tone and volume are set right?
2). How many of us know what their unconscious lick is?
3). I'd like to hear audio clips of everybody's unconscious lick. _________________ Franklin D10 8&5, Excel D10 8&5, homemade buffer/overdrive, Moyo pedal, GT-001 effects, 2x BAM200 for stereo. 2x GW8003 8" driver in homemade closed-box. Also NV400 etc. etc... |

Ken and Erv -
The Line 6 Pog unit that you see is attached to the leg of the steel sitting in front of Bobby Caldwell
At this point in time, BE was using Brad Sarno's Revelation coupled with a Lexicon MPX-1. The settings for the Lexicon are on Ernie Renn's BE Website.
I have a photo of that rack, but my 'file retrieval system' is not as good as my 'filing system.'
I agree with Glenn that BE was truly the ultimate pro.
'walk out, flip the switch on Rev from Standby to On, check delay and one note of tone, and go.
PS - this video is definitely in my Top 10 List of things experienced at Scotty's Convention
That specific topic might be good subject for future post! |

i remember watching Jimmy Day habitually pressing each finger pick tip with his thumb so as just to make sure they were firmly on. |
