Just completed this new 10 string keyless in maple with ebony trim. Not sure if I can get pics to upload with this new photo file,,,can't seem to find a way to resize the way I used to do it in "paint"??? Well,,,,guess I will have to try later.
OK,,,looks like I have a bunch of blurry pics,,,not sure what happened. Anyway,,,it is a "tru-oil" finish,,,still trying for that finish that the master of tru-oil,,,the late Tom Pettingill did.

Ooh, that's so pretty, Sonny - blurry or not.
Bill, I can imagine you in a few years with a massive collection of 10 stringers, all in Alkire tuning. _________________ David K |

Thanks guys,,,
George,,,actually I think I have a tripod somewhere???,,man,,I love this alumitone pick up!
The last pic has a streak of "spalting" in the maple,,,tiger stripe didn't show under the red stain as I wanted. Anyway,,it's probably going to be a keeper guitar,,,may sell my 8 string maple/mahogany

The finish on the 10-stringer looks pretty good.
Tom was the master of Tru-Oil. He would do multiple coats with very light fine sanding in between.
If you check some of his posts about his builds, he may actually describe his method for his Tru-Oil finish.
I can check some of his e-mails to me regarding our various collaborations, to see if he got specific about that.....if you wish. _________________ Four Pettingills and a Clinesmith Aluminum. Fender Blues Junior. Quilter Mini-101. |

OK, cool. With 4 of his steels, we communicated frequently during builds and occasionally in between. He was a font of information and very giving with that information.
Yeah, I miss him too. _________________ Four Pettingills and a Clinesmith Aluminum. Fender Blues Junior. Quilter Mini-101. |

Sonny, those are beautiful - kind of space-age and antique at the same time. I bought an Excel pedal steel with the Lace p/u and the clarity is superb. _________________ Make sleeping dogs tell the truth!

Hey Pete,,,thanks for the nice comment.
Actually when I first started building,,maybe 10-12 years ago, I took 5-6 guitars to TSGA,,,Mike Siler (now the MC of the show) and I shared a booth and I was honored by the late Rick Alexander buying one of my guitars,,,felt like it was a "badge of approval" by one of the masters of non-pedal. And last year Stephen Cowell, who co-runs the non-pedal room became an owner of one of my guitars,,,,so I guess I have a connection with the non-pedal room. After attending TSGA from the very beginning, I have not gone to the shows the past 2-3 years,,,maybe next year.
I normally tune to a B6 to coincide with my uni PSG tuning. This guitar is tuned to C6 now with a D on top,,,will probably go back to G on top. |
