I build my own and surround the steel with layers of house sheathing foam. Though I've had guitars delivered in one piece in just a case surrounded by cardboard, I've also have them arrive destroyed that way. If you can get cardboard sheets, it's pretty easy to make a professional looking box with sharp corners.
