A friend is asking about getting this LS-2 Gold Tone for $400. How does it compare to other inexpensive steels please.

Good Tone builds great quality instruments.
I have a guitar like the one pictured plus an 8 string. |

Hate to say this but you are paying for the build quality and not the pickup.
I had a Goldtone for 3 gigs and despite putting heavier stings even changing the nut and bridge to metal for better vibration and removing that impractical pickup cover.
The things sounded like a cheap Chinese pickup but the craftsmanship was nice.
This was my experience.
Sustain was poor,
Pickup didn't have a wide dynamic range that was audible, sounded like a mid range piece of crap.
The guitar itself however was beautifully finished
built well
very light (made hence why the sustain was also rubbish) _________________ Stefan

I have one like that. It was my first lap steel. Still love it. It was great for learning. I eventually had a Lollar pick up installed. Now it sounds as good as any. |
