why don't you just post a video of you playing it, like I plan on doing.
FYI: I don't have any set voicings. I play it differently every time I play it. It's jazz after all.

Bill-
I think you are doing great on this...and nobody should expect you to sound "polished" and "fluid" at this point in your journey...you get there now and then, and that just says you will be there more as you gain experience.
On the other hand, did you ever think just to go to pedal steel guitar? there's some "heaven and hell" on that, but mostly the pedals and levers get you there in a pretty rational way....your comment about being able to play it all on one fret is reminiscent of the pedal steel...
I also just gave up on pedal steel...played in an alt-country band with it for 6 years, but I just ran out of steam on the serious practice needed to advance further...(Jerry Garcia quit after a few years of great playing because "Pedal steel is just too hard", so I don't feel too bad)...but it seems like you might just flip over to it pretty easily....

I had an MSA 12 string Universal but didn't like it. Pedal Steel is WAY to mechanical for my tastes. Plus I like the sound of the non-pedal better. It is lighter, more compact, plus I have bad feet.

I did post a year ago when I first started studying Cherokee, have grown a lot since then but nice to hear where it started.

FYI like you I have different voicings I use depending on the goal. But I mentioned voicing types as to get a fresh idea of what potential voicings you like/use in the chord melody of this song.
