I am in the process of putting together a Fender Deluxe 6 string steel from parts. It’s the model with 2 pickups and blend knob. Does anyone know if you can use a standard single coil Strat size pickup in this? Or is the size and pole spacing different from a standard single coil 6 string guitar pickup?

Sonny ,

For what you want to do you need a matched Set of Fender retro 6 string-master pickups.

They need to be regular and one reversed winding and a few more technical details. Most of the pickup makers do them now , - Rio Grande - Tom Brantly - are 2 off the top of my head , but thre are several others.

Hopefully the Fender afficianadoes will chime in with more suggestions.

The wireing is also an issue to get correct with the blend and tone pot -

Basically these are set up so the blend knob adds the front pickup to rear which is always on full. the tone is for both , and particular value - 1 meg , the others are 250k.

There are schematics for this available.

The stringmaster pickups have some where in the 42 gauge 8500 windings range , -- different from Tele and Strat versions. As well they have different magnet spacings. and different magnet lengths.

Sorry to get your name incorrect , I thought it was Sonny from Texas.

Glad to Help You

Please forgive me if this is drifting just a tad off topic, but at least there is a tangential relationship to "Dual Fender pickups." The pickups on the Ultratone pictured are custom-made 7-string reverse-wound Stringmaster-type pickups from Jerry Sentell.

I found that out the hard way on my "Ultramaster" conversion:

I followed this Seymour Duncan wiring diagram:

I have double- and triple- checked my work and it still isn't right. Any suggestions?

Jack,
I believe that Seymour Duncan diagram is wrong about the pot wiring. If you wire it as shown as the "Bottom View of Baseplate" (which I took to mean underside), your volume and tone pots will operate counter-clockwise instead of clockwise. Is that how yours is working? The Seymour Duncan drawing is based on the also incorrectly labeled original Fender drawing. I never said anything because I figured I was just an idiot that couldn't properly read the diagram.

Thanks for the replies fellas. Because I’m in a little bit of a hurry to get this steel up and running, I was hoping I could order a couple Strat pickups and drop them in there... but it looks like I may need something with custom spacing to fit the strings. So I’ll wait till the parts are delivered and take some measurements. Once I get everything measured out, I’ll post an update.

I contacted Jerry Sentell about pickups and he is going to make a custom pair. Very quick response to my message. Just needed to send measurements and he said he can make pickups to fit. Below are images with measurements for reference.
