If you can find it... Hank Thompson live on air 1947-52 ( If I remember correctly) . Cd put out on a European label. Features early Curly and Dusty Stewart on steel.
Also check this out. 1951 Curly with Lefty..

I’m assuming this was recorded long before volume pedals. He must be using the knob on the console? What a beautiful tone, and great playing on this one and on Doug’s link. |

Here is another with Lefty Frizzell from my YouTube channel.Curly's solo on "Ida Red Likes to do the Boogie" (starts about the 3:18 mark) was the one that first caught my attention.....Still does!......Chris

Curley sure had some energy in his playing, but there is a price to pay for everything. In this case, it was wearing that shirt. _________________ Don't go in the water after lunch. You'll get a cramp and drown. - Mother. |

I used to ask Norm Stevens about Curly as a teenager. He remembered Chalker as being 15 or so but I think he was more like 19-20. I imagine Lefty was in jail around when Curly was 15. (Curly always wanted to drive & didn't have a license-my guess for the age discrepancy). The stories were typical mishaps as one would expect from a young man on the road like when he did finally get to drive,he faded the brakes & Nitro Expressed the Western Cherokees down a mountain. Curly probably wouldn't be on any Hank Thompson stuff until 1952 or so. |
