I received my pedal steel one month ago, and thought I'd post a little update. I've been working a little with the winston/keith book that i've been combining with years of experience on other instruments. That said, steel has one of the steepest learning curves I've come across yet.

My first line of attach was to figure out 1, 4, 5,3 and 6 chords in various positions, then noodling along with lots of duos (Gillian Welch, Caleb Klauder & Reeb Willms, etc.). Then I started working through some of the beginner tablature in winston/keith book. Now I am only beginning to start to think about blocking, which is proving to be a the most difficult aspect yet. At this point I am working on picking out simple harmonized melodies as breaks and getting some blocking muscle memory into my right hand.

Here's a quick video of a simple break I've been working on:

Thanks,

No one here will disagree. It'll teach you music AND humility. But every ascent you complete is incredibly rewarding.

Good for you!!
