This was the 2nd guitar that Leonard built for Speedy West. I bought it from Ricky Davis and played it for about a year when I was first learning C6th. It had a wonderful tone and the pedal action was very smooth. I should have never sold it. Oh Well

Jeffrey, the serial number on your guitar doesn’t seem to follow the same backwards Year/Month/Day scheme as the others posted here - unless I’m missing something. Is it because Mr. Calaway had his own serial number system?

Fred, not sure. It's the last model Stadler built, made in 2001. You're right - looks like at least he reversed the order to put the year first.

Mine doesn't have a serial number that I can find. My guess is that it's early-mid 60's though. I added the three knee levers that are on it now and replaced the pickups with Stratospheric repros Todd Clinesmith makes.

Here is my Marlen project. I am adding another knee lever to have 4 and replacing a lot of original parts I had machined. I am putting it back to 6 pedals because the 2 added don't match and I don't use them anyway. Serial is 210 139691...

I guess I should post my 1971 Marlen now that it has been serviced & repaired. Model 210 Serial # 191791.

It was a total wreck basket case when I bought it in July 2021.

Ricky,

Yes reading the serial number backwards give you the "Year" and then "day" and "month".....

So my serial number 191791 translates to:

Year: 1971

Day: 9th

Month: January

January 9th 1971 is a Saturday. Did Marlen make guitars on a Saturday back then?

In any event if it was made on January 9th I was a senior in high school. If it was made on September 1st I was in the US Army at Ft Devens MA in AIT with the Army Security Agency (ASA) with the stellar rank of Private.

At that time I played a little acoustic blues slide guitar in OPEN E (my main focus back then was jazz & rock 6 string electric guitar) on a 1936 May Bell "Hawaiian" guitar that was my Dad's. I still have that guitar Smile . It's now tuned to C6.

I’ll look for the serial number later… if there is a serial number. Pretty sure this is a 1956 or 1957 - old school for sure. I tuned it up tonight - feels very different from my 1989 Marlen, but there wouldn’t be this if there hadn’t been that. It actually plays better than I thought. I’ll get some better pics this weekend.

It actually belongs to a bandmate; was his father's, so he has a bit of sentimental attachment even though he doesn't play steel. Been in its case in his closet for several years after Mike Calaway gave it a workover, so I've pulled it out to get it playing again. Reidsville is less than an hour away, so I assume this has always stayed local.

Don't know if he's interested in selling or not, but PM me if you want me to follow up. I can't imagine it would ever be someone's main axe; the technology has come a long way. But as I said, much more playable than I would have expected.

Ha Tony; actually Leonard did tell me: "Ricky; it's really a flip of the coin to what me and Marvin stamped on there for month and day, back then; but we did get better at it the more we started to build".....LOL.
