Topic: Issue with Carter Starter pickup |

I've been playing my Carter Starter for about a year and a half, with good results, but all of a sudden there's something different about the sound of the pickup. The output has dropped considerably (like 75%), and the tone is now tinny - the lows are gone. Seems like a phase or grounding issue? I notice a lot more hum now, and when I touch a metal part of the guitar I hear a little pop. I've narrowed it down to the starter - it's not the amp, cables, or volume pedal. Have any other Starter players out there had this problem? Any suggestions? The weird thing is, I played it two days ago and it was fine - and it hasn't been moved at all.

I had the same problem when I had a Carter Starter. I called em up and even though the unit was beyond warranty they had me send back the failed pickup and they sent me a new one which worked good. They said they knew they had an issue with a batch of CS pickups. I hope they're still willing to do the same. It needs to be replaced though.

John, did they mention what exactly the problem was with the pickup? It strikes me as strange that it worked fine for so long, and then "bit it" randomly. I've never had a pickup take a nosedive like that before.

Bryan, I hope you'll keep us posted with this issue.
I have a 2000 model Starter, and get a little pop and scratch moving the RKL, as if it's a loose ground somewhere. No loss of volume or tone.
The pickup on mine has a solid cover--no exposed polepieces, and it seems I've seen others with exposed poles. Does yours fit the description of mine? |

Well, I talked to Carter and it turns out the pickup has some internal shorting. They worked out a way to get me a good price on a pro pickup, so there's a silver lining - I get to upgrade my sound! Charlie, to answer your question, the pickup I had in there was the kind with no pole pieces. Just a flat black pastic cover.
