I know I've already posted about Ben, but I keep coming back to him as being my biggest inspiration on the steel. He was a master of understatement. Anyone have any Ben Keith lore? Any Ben Keith-isms they employ in their own playing? |

Neal, I agree Ben was a tasteful player, and I was so glad to get to meet him, and Kris Kristofferson in Memphis, while they were working on Jerry Lee Lewis's last album. |

I got to hang out with Ben for a day back when he looked like this. He was playing great even then (as one of Faron Young's Deputies.)

It's tough because although he was very prolific, it's almost more about his note choice, and when he decided to play in the song. I don't neccesarily associate a certain technique to his playing as you would someone like Mooney.
I've just always appreciated his playing. Subtle, tasteful and always fits the mood. Much like my taste in six string players. Never got off on solos or overplaying, but a four note fill can completely elevate a song. Ben was a master, but he's tough to emulate. |

FWIW Darrell McCall (third from left in that photo) thought the world of Ben and his playing. And Darrell is pretty picky about steel players, and kept some pretty good company (Ben, Big E, Dicky O, etc.) _________________ Tommy Detamore

I have the Darrell McCall Bear Family box set and Ben Keith is on several of Darrell's 1960's sessions. Good stuff. _________________ Bill Cunningham
