The thing that drew me to the steel guitar 50 or more years ago,was the tone.I can't recall who I first heard playing steel, but I remember the tone so captivated me.
The tone that Alan Akaka gets from his Canopus lap steel is the sound that I remember from all those years ago. There's a video of him playing a preview to the Maui Steel Guitar Festival some years ago on YouTube.I don't know how to link to YouTube, the video contains a short interview, and Allan is strumming. And that sound to my ears is what a Steel Guitar should sound like.
Could someone post that vid? MAHALO in advance. Very Happy

Whispering Lullaby. If Alan had hit every harmonic, I would have suspected sorcery. Tom, you probably heard Danny Stewart playing it, a signature tune of his. He plays it in the soundtrack of the movie, Aloma of the South Seas (1940).

It's not the tune, It's the tone.

Jeff's tone playing on his long scale frypan is also a good example of that instrument.
