I have listened to classic 40's and 50's country most of my life and I have been playing music for more than half of that. I just picked up a D8 steel and I am ready to learn.
Could you folks let me know who are the big players in the non-pedal steel world and who they played with? I would like to build my music collection with these players in mind! |

At or near the top of your list should be Don Helms, who is on many of Hank Williams' hits. This book from Mel Bay should help get you started:

Just go on YouTube and look for Joaquin Murphy, Speedy West, Vance Terry, Noel Boggs, Bob Dunn,Billy Bowman, Buddy Merill...
That will keep you busy for a while. |

I am a bit surprised that no one has mentioned him but you may want to check out Jerry Byrd. Jerry played with everyone.
Also have a listen to Kayton Roberts and of course Herb Remington |

Along with the preceding great suggestions, Brad Bechtel has an excellent website dedicated to various topics concerning non-pedal steel guitar, slide guitar, and dobro.
