I have listened to classic 40's and 50's country most of my life and I have been playing music for more than half of that. I just picked up a D8 steel and I am ready to learn.

Could you folks let me know who are the big players in the non-pedal steel world and who they played with? I would like to build my music collection with these players in mind!

At or near the top of your list should be Don Helms, who is on many of Hank Williams' hits. This book from Mel Bay should help get you started:

Just go on YouTube and look for Joaquin Murphy, Speedy West, Vance Terry, Noel Boggs, Bob Dunn,Billy Bowman, Buddy Merill...
That will keep you busy for a while.

I am a bit surprised that no one has mentioned him but you may want to check out Jerry Byrd. Jerry played with everyone. Very Happy
Also have a listen to Kayton Roberts and of course Herb Remington

Along with the preceding great suggestions, Brad Bechtel has an excellent website dedicated to various topics concerning non-pedal steel guitar, slide guitar, and dobro.
