There was a little discussion about Hal on another topic. A lot of his licks from the 60's were so good and he did a lot of those with the Wilburn Brothers on their albums and TV shows. Actually, I believe those licks were done first for the Wilburns before Loretta Lynn.
Back then and through the 70's, anytime I could get my hands on a Wiburn Brothers album, I'd jump on it. I cut my teeth on those.
Anyway, the intro on this live one I do a teach-in on it. So CLASSIC Rugg.

I love the Hal Rugg style of picking. The group I work with now has a young lady that sings a number of Loretta Lynn songs. I love playing them so I can play some of Hals intros and picking styles. |

Yeah, those shows were great. Hal and Curly really burned it up. And the camera even showed the steel rides!

Haha. Is that an outtake or the actual record? Back when Reed was still a session player I guess?
At probably 8 years old, before I even thought about playing steel guitar, I never missed the Wilburn Brother show just to get to hear Hal and Spicher or Curley and Jimmy Capps play the instrumental when they returned from the commercial. Great

Tore, that is Big Jim Murphy playing with Loretta. There was a thread on the forum about it otherwise I'd have no clue. |

For you Rugg fans (and we all should be) there's a vinyl album by a studio group called the "Concrete Cowboys" that you can buy cheaply. Bobby Black told me it's one of his favorites and I tracked it down. Stock cover tunes by a group put together by a producer to cover the hits, and Hal plays beautifully on it.
