These guys aren't really "pros', but if they keep at it they could eventually make some money doing this.

Interesting! On song Nr.8 it says 2 tenors, which means high strung guitars, the key is C#, but they are playing out of the E position.

Still not sure but those high strings must be tuned down immensely for this.

I had an issue with a set list quite a few years ago.

The guitar player was nice enough to write the key next to each song title...so I thought.

Ends up, that was the first chord of the song.

Oh Well

Played in a band with a girl bass player/singer who did "Someday Soon". She will go to her grave insisting that it is in the key of Am because that is the first chord of the song.

The other reason I like setlists with keys is, I play with more than one band at times, and they don't always do the songs in the same key.

If it said 'three tenors' we might have interpreted it differently.
But it's only rock and roll, and I like it.

Real men put keys on set lists.

On that Stones set list, what do you suppose the * symbol for each song title means? If it was a restaurant menu, it might mean “gluten free”. Or if it was a Thai menu, it might mean “spicy “.

Where this sort of thing can really become an epidemic is at jams - not the steel guitar kind, but more in the vein of acoustic or bluegrass.

I've been at big jams with multiple circles happening on the property and a third of the time or more someone will lead a song, kick it off without a clue of what key we're supposed to be playing. I'll typically yell over the din, "what key?"

I was at one of these bigger deals last fall, and of the 40+ people in attendance I became the Designated Dobro Player. A jam circle in the living room, a second in the garage, and a third in the backyard. I would guess 80% or more of the songs I had never played on dobro in my life. The majority of them I could hum because I was at least somewhat familiar with the tune. And maybe 10% were originals - when someone starts into a song they wrote - and they don't bother to announce the key - there should be a bouncer at these deals to give them the bum's rush. "Pack up your guitar - you're outta here!"

I got a kick out of songs 11 & 12 which are Keith songs.

Instead of a numeric tempo on the far right it reads "KR." Winking

I saw that too. Have to smile. I guess the tempo is congruent with his mood.

I would imagine that if the band leader doesn't give you the key, just kick it off in whatever...see what happens.

Sad Laughing

I've been doing this like many here for over 40 years, I have never heard of this but I have heard of singers , as Clyde mentions, who didn't know the names of their songs or the keys but said please kick it off...

I have also been asked to play that really popular Emmons instrumental song,

" you know the one I'm talking about"

" Uhh, No I don't , unless you mean Way To Survive " ?

"No thats not it, you're a Steel player and you don't know what Emmons song I'm talking about "? " I can't believe this "

" NO , believe it "...

I can relate to THAT! Steels off to one side, the guitar boys kick it off and I'm putting one ear to my amp trying to be sure I've got it before getting loud enough for others to hear. Or turning to the other steel player and yelling "DOG!" or "GEORGE!" or whatever!
