I just received a D130F, original cone. I put it in a favorite open back cabinet and fired it up, powered by a Twin Reverb head. This speaker sounds really good. Incredibly sweet high end.
I also have a K130 original cone and I swear the D series sounds slightly better. Has that been anybody else's experience?
The D130f is close to 50 years old so I don't plan to push it. No high volume gigs. But for low volume gigs, or playing at home, or recording it should be fine.

| I don't have a D130 to try, but I have a K130 in an extension cab that I really like. For heavenly sounds, I put the "Twin" with the EV SRO15 on one side of the guitar, and the JBL cab on the other! |

| Those old JBL's are hard to beat. I use the K130's and E130's and found I really like the K130's a little better but you can push the E130's a little harder. K130's tend to let you know when they've had enough. I put a D130F in my Fender Steel King and, although heavy, sounded great. |

I just reconed a D130F and put it in a Fender Custom Vibrosonic. That is my favorite speaker and I have it in several different amps.

The recone kit is partially set together when you get it. Just follow the instructions and it's really not a big deal. This is the second recone I've done.

They should be outstanding. It's likely that although that speaker says 16 ohms, it actually more like an 8 ohm speaker. JBL was notoriously funny about their ohms ratings.

Like Paul said, JBL has stamped 16 ohm on 8 ohm speakers!
I have a D120 in my 5E3 clone that says 16 ohm, it actually measures approx. 12 ohm resistance, what I would expect. |

I have a Webb open back cabinet and a Webb closed back cabinet both loaded with 4-ohm JBL-K130 speakers. For my ears there is nothing better.

Not to totally hijack your thread Paul, but I love JBLs too and have a couple D120F's that need reconing, and I'm weighing options. Good to know you had a positive experience with that kit Erv... anyone else had a D120F reconed somewhere recently by a pro?
I'm considering Ted Weber currently - I've read he offers a thin paper cone option that is similar to the original, but I'd love to know anyone's experience with the subject recently. |

| I had a D120F reconed at Wesley Audio in Georgia. Because you're paying for labor and other checks on the speaker it costs a bit more than a kit. I have a kit from the same manufacturer as Erv that I'm about to install. I chose the "vintage" kit with no cloth surround and voice coil configuration of the period. It looks like the paper of the cone from Wesley might be slightly better quality. Also he applied the gooey tack to the back of the ring where the paper folds to reinforce it. In the recone kit it is applied by a machine and is not nearly as heavy or as tacky. I'd prefer the Wesley Audio job. Before the speaker was broken in it sounded deeper but more brittle than a non-reconed example with different dynamics. After break-in they were virtually indistinguishable. |

The 16 ohm on the label refers to impedance.
It will measure 12 ohm resistance with
your meter. Two different things as you probably know.

A speaker with 16 ohm IMPEDANCE will measure around 12 ohm RESISTANCE, and an 8 ohm IMPEDANCE will generally measure around 6 ohm RESISTANCE.
