Oh boy. I practice every day, but with kids and work and other bands (mandolin, dobro), I very rarely get out to play pedal steel with other people.
Last night, I got out to practice for an upcoming gig with a local country band.
The other players are really good, and they have played together for years.
They love the sound of the steel- I'm one of the few guys around here who plays steel who isn't wrapped up in other projects.
I didn't embarrass myself, and I was able to add some shimmer to the overall sound. I even tried out my five licks that I know.
Newman harmonized scale rides kept me in the game.
A couple frantic solos.
After a full year of woodshedding I'd say I'm a few small steps past where I was last year.
One thing I walked away with- 2 hours of playing with other people taught me as much as about what I learned in months of solo practice.
I have to get out more.

That sentence right there is steel guitar gold. In a nutshell, that's what learning is all about.
