How to tell the difference if they have no stickers on them. I need a 1501 and have two BW-15" speakers with no markings on them. Thanks, Gary

There are several eras of both speakers, but generally speaking, the 1502 has a ribbed cone while the 1501 is smooth.

Some eras of 1502 had an alum. dust cap, some have a paper dust cap. They were available in either 4 ohm and 8 ohm impedance.

All eras of 1501's have an aluminum cap and were 4 ohm. Either model could have DT long basket, or SB shallow basket depending on the era.

Unless you are sure that they are one or the other of these models, there's just no way to identify them. There should have been a label by the terminals.

Can anyone confirm the Peavey 1501 was modeled after the JBL D-130F with increased power-handling capability?

Thanks,

Don

Considering they don't sound much alike I wouldn't worry about that. They are what they are.

As far as power handling JBL "D" series speakers handled 60 watts when new. JBL used weird specs and the designer has been explaining the real power capabilities on amp boards for years.

Don, I don't think the BW's were designed to SOUND like a JBL so to speak, from my understanding they were designed to withstand the output power of the PV amps , the JBLS could not do that. The early PV amps were using JBLS' and popping them at gig levels.

I destroyed two JBL's in my early model Session 400. The 3rd speaker was the newly developed BW and had no problems after that.
I have 4 1501's. Each one has a different designed magnet from different era's. You can measure the depth of the basket and determine if it's a shallow or deep basket, but you'd have to know the depth of both. Or, not worry about if it's shallow or deep and just advertise it as 1501.

I just happen to have one of each 1501's in storage: If you put a straight edge or stretch a string across the front edge of the basket and measure to the top crown of the dust cover, the shallow basket will measure 2 1/8 inches and the deep basket will measure 2 3/4 inches.

You can differentiate between Deep and Shallow baskets by the frame ribs. DT's have rectangular frame spokes, while SB's are round or semi-circle.
