It's not the 60's, 70's or 80's; it's 2018. Whoa!

A push/pull is not for the novice. Whoa!

Why do you say that?

A push/pull is harder to work on than an all pull guitar.
Especially if you want to change things around.
It also has to be tuned differently than an all pull guitar.
I would not recommend a novice going to a p/p.
If you have started out on an all pull guitar, I would stick with another all pull.

I agree with Erv.
All-pull is best if you're going from a student model. I have both, and until you learn the underside of a push pull, you could find yourself out on a limb if something mechanical gets out of whack. Being a newer player, I would imagine you might want to spend your time learning to play the guitar, vs. working on it underneath.
Just my 2 cents. Give Billy Cooper a call tomorrow about the
Emmons SKH SD10.
Saw this too. Excellent step up. It's here on the forum.

Erv,
Glad to help out. I hope he gets a nice guitar. The GFI link would be an excellent choice, and one he could keep for a long time. Great price too!
Just trying to help point him in the right direction!
