All that's missing is the "smoky room and dim lights". Great stuff Mike. Very restrained playing.

"3 most important figures in Jazz. I'd say one of the 3 most important composers in the history of music.

Nice playing as always Mike, and of course, the experiment is always interesting. For me, in its current state, it is less successful than your monk stuff. But can't wait to see where you go with it.

"just watched a Mingus Documentary recently"

Mingus is a complicated character. One of the greatest musical geniuses and one of the biggest aholes in all of jazz.

Don't know if I'd be any better than outbursts in the 50's and 60's.

"Mingus's autobiography also serves as an insight into his psyche, as well as his attitudes about race and society. It includes accounts of abuse at the hands of his father from an early age, being bullied as a child, his removal from a white musician's union, and grappling with disapproval while married to white women and other examples of the hardship and prejudice." - Wiki

Maybe I'd be worse so IMHO I am not sure if the label he was given over the years is entirely fair.

Yeah, tell that Juan Tizol who mingus pulled a knife on in the short time Mingus played with Duke Ellington which led to his firing,

Or the time he threatened to stab Eric Dolphy when Dolphy said he wanted to leave the band.

Or the time he punched Jimmy Knepper (trumpet player) in the mouth because I guess he wasn't working fast enough trying to put the charts together for Epitaph and almost destroyed his career.

Or the time he tried to crush pianist Toshiko Akiyoshi's fingers with the keyboard cover while on stage.

Or the fact that his favorite past time was blasting holes in the wall of his apartment with a shotgun.
