Here was a fun night with my pal Randy Beavers. We broke out the new Deluxe Reverb Randy just built along with it's brother my KT66 DR. Both are high powered amps sporting 6L6 and KT66 power tubes. Anyway, here we are in tone heaven...

Mike, that’s the best stuff I’ve seen all year, and might be for the rest of the year too...
There just is NOT enough of Randy on YouTube... He is such a great player.

What do you think the chances are that he would share his set-up with us?

Randy is without a doubt one of my favorite players. He gets more out of E9 than many get out of 2 necks.
His phrasing and intonation are impecable.

And Randy uses a basic Emmons setup. He told me once, it's all on there, but you have to find that 7th and 9th string and move around. He is absolutely right. Just wish I could do it.

Plus a really great version of Night Life on E9

Oh yes, and I am proud to call him my friend.

I think Randy had mentioned quite a while ago now, that he lowers the 9th a whole on the same KL he lowers 6 a whole... Its a nice change.... He’s also one of my favorites Bill

One important change he does and one I have adopted as well is RKL lowers low G# to G and D to C#. He also lowers his D on the RKR as well as the low B (great change to add that low B...

I think I have some of this on here... only I’ve split my E’s on this guitar so I lower 9 a whole on LKR

Many thanks all! It was a fun night. We played too many notes at too loud a volume, told and made up stories, listened to Big E's live albums, and generally acted much younger than our aging years. I can't wait to do it again!

My setup is very standard. Normal Emmons 3 floors, LKL raises 4 & 8 to F, LKR lowers 4 & 8, LKV lower 5 & 10 1/2. RKL lowers 6 & 9 1/2, RKR lowers 2 a whole, 9 lowers 1/2, and 10 lowers a whole tone.

I believed every story you told - LOL

BTW, Bobby Black called 5 minutes after you and Wayne left. He is a big Randy Beavers fan. Don't worry, I straighten him out on that hehe!

Great stuff guys. Wonderful sound and playing Randy. Looks like an ideal way to spend a cold winter night. Playing steel guitar music with good friends. That could get to be habit forming!

Great to hear Randy's playing again on this new rig and your support as well Mike.

That was definitely a great time.

Mike, you forgot to mention the camera man. He was another great addition to the party. Smile

Great "picking" and "tone" on guitar and steel.

Man, that was just great!

As others have mentioned, Randy is proof positive that one doesn't have to haul around a guitar with two necks and he can play about anything.

Ahh...Bobby Black - the ageless wonder. I bring friends who know next to nothing about steel guitar to Bobby's gigs here in NorCal and they are blown away.

And Mike's rhythm playing - I've been working on improving my rhythm guitar playing over the past few years and now I want to go plug in my Tele and practice. Great job Mike!

Speaking of Wayne and the camera work, what was he using? I got a Canon DLSR for Christmas for both photos and videos. I want to start shooting some simple music videos, and I am researching a "shotgun" mic to be mounted on the top for better sound quality than the camera's onboard mic.

I will be at the Canon Learning Center this Friday evening in San Francisco for a free two hour class to familiarize myself with operating the camera. I think they historically hold these things early in January because there are a lot of new Canon owners from Christmas.

Not a thing wrong with that - I have the same phone and the basic video quality is pretty darn good - but I'm wanting to take it to the next level. We'll see how my rookie class goes on Friday evening in San Francisco.

Thank-you Randy.... Somehow I had it in my head that you lowered 9 a whole as well as a half... I might have to tweak mine a little to see if I can figure out some of what you’re getting... You certainly see and find things most other don’t.

Randy can make any guitar and amp sound great, but this is top drawer. And he's a master of getting C6 sounds on E9.
