I've had the itch for a new all tube amp for a couple of years now. While over at my friend Mike Scaggs house a while back I tried his Deluxe Reverb and was really impressed, and the bug bit me to try my hand at building one. One thing led to another and we went on a shopping spree online and ordered all these parts that I had no idea what to do with. With his help and coaching I got started and I can truly say nothing has ever seemed more intimidating! But I figured one step at a time. Literally, choose the correct part, bend and solder it in place one at a time. Well it seemed like there was about 30 to 40,000 parts in there but I finally got through it. The payoff, tone like I've never had! Maybe I'm still in shock it actually worked but this thing sings! On the down side the burns and puncture wounds, but they will heal while this amp lives on!

I can't thank Mike enough for his help with this. I don't think I could have done it without him.

Here is a link to Mike's site where he's posted pics. Check out that blue turret board! Too bad it is covered up inside because it's a looker! I plan on doing a video with it as soon as my hands heal up. Very Happy

It's really cool that you pulled off building a tube amp without any prior experience Randy. It looks great!

Congratulations Randy. One more reason for me to be jealous of you. I could give birth before I could build an amp.

What speaker are you using?

Hey Doug, I've got speakers from back when I was 10 years old! No joke. However the winner for now is an old EV Force 12" I've had for 20 years or so. I've always been a fan of EV's but that particular model, which is a 150 watt speaker, has always been my favorite. Very warm and clear tone, great lows and highs. I believe it's found a new home in this cabinet.

wow, what a great build. congrats!!

i've built two now. my first in august and the second i finished a few days ago. they are both 58 deluxe clones. the first i sort of slapped together and even tho it turned out great, i knew i could do better so i bought the tube depot kit and the quality is better but the sound is just as good if not better.

quick edit: i owe everything i know from blake hawkins who is a member here. i really could not be repairing and building amps if it weren't for him.

play music!

Great job, Randy. The tone is awesome in the video. The Force 12 is also one of my favorite speakers. I tested them head to head with several JBL D120F speakers years ago. To me it won hands downs over the JBL.

Absolutely marvellous, Randy. So, where would a guy who’s more intimidated than you would find an amp that’s ready to go for say under a $1000? Also, those 705 sound great with your Hybrid. I’ve got the stock single coils on mine and they’re not bad. Would like to have no hum. I just did a session with a friend who provided a 69 bandmaster combo and insisted I use my 69 PP for the session. Came out great! By the way, that amp’s for sale.
