I want to change the pickups on a Mullen G2. Don't know if a BL 705, BL 710 or Telonics 409 is the best choice. Any recommendations? |

Stay with the stock Mullen pickup, you won't get any better sound by changing the pickup. Other HB pickups will be quieter if this is what you are after. I find the 705 is very hot and can't be lowered enough in the G2 cavity for my taste. The 710 is a good pickup but it won't sound like your single coil, close but not the same. The 409 would be my choice if I wanted to change for whatever reason, due to the ability to fine tune each string, which is a job in itself. Remember, many favorite steel tunes were recorded with a single coil pickup. I chased my tail trying different pickups and always went back to the stock Mullen single coil for my G2. This is only my opinion, others may disagree, although I don't think Boo Miller or Tommy White will, Herby Wallace always liked the stock Mullen pickup in his steel as well. Good luck |

Why do you want to change the pickup?
Just for fun or an experiment?
Don't like the sound of the current one?
Noise issues?
Other? |

I have a Mullen single coil in my SD10 G2 and 705s in my D10 G2. I get what I'm looking for with each. Every time I think about swapping the single coil, I play it and like it so much I just can't bring myself to do it. |

If it were me, I'd probably just stay with the stock pickup, but...
If you want to hear what the Lawrence 705, 710 and Telonics 409 sound like on the same guitar, Mickey Adams did that comparison, along with a few other pickups, on the E9 neck on a new MSA Legend guitar in this recent video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T1aIqkcjwys
That should give you an idea how they sound relative to each other even if you'd be putting them on a different instrument. They all sound good to me.
He also demos several pickups on the C6 neck on the same guitar here:

705, and a Lil Izzy is my choice for a G2..
The Izzy has a pretty profound effect on the low mids/bass
Separation... JMHO
At MSA... we have the solution to this dilemma....
I love my 409, but last night, I swapped out to the 705 (during a song) and HELLO! _________________ ARTIST RELATIONS: MSA GUITARS

I love Mullen stock pick ups, that is a perfect combination between guitar and pick up.... I would never use anything other then a stock pick ups in Mullen ... _________________ https://steelguitarsonline.com/ |

Thanks so much for all your replies. The steel guitar forum has a way of bringing the world to my home. Merry Christmas to all and the very best in 2018. |

Many people love the 705. I suspect they are mostly solid state amp users. That 705 can be too much gain in a Tube amp.
The 710 is nicer with a Tube amp. All around great pickup.
Both are HB quiet.
The Telonics has its own sound, very full and even, also quiet. I’ve never thought it sounds like a single coil, but that is often a compliment you hear. It is also loud.
For single coils, I’ve tried Emmons and Truetone. I like both. The Truetone fatter, the Emmons more even.
Never could find a use for a Little Izzy. Too much high end hype for me. If a guitar and pickup combo are unusually dark, maybe then I’d try using it.

I play a new MSA and leave the True tone in most of the time. Also like the Little Izzy or Goodrich 7a. |

As I recall, the 710 was designed to be used with passive volume pedals. |
