The great singer of the Smithereens has died. I always lit up when I heard him sing.

Yes, Just heard about it yesterday, he lived about 3 miles away from me and I met him a few times at some shows, ones that he was just in attendance. One of my good friends was a good friend of his.

RIP Pat!

I walked into Kenny's Castaways in the early 80s with a bunch of friends and The Smithereens were playing. This was before their exposure. I don't remember much about the music and I didn't think much of it at the time. One distinct thing I can remember is the little facial hair Pat DiNizio had, because a friend of mine at the time was using black comb from lip to his chin to simulate it.

When they did have their first hit on MTV, I was shocked, but I dug their sound. Had great jangly guitars and a good baritone singer with an Elvis Costello-like delivery. I watched a few recent videos and they still sounded really good.
