Here's a story Speedy told me when I visited him in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, back in the day.
Speedy said he couldn't read a note of music and one time when he was recording in LA, the producer said, "strike [such and such] bar" and he'd pretend he'd do that.
Eventually the producer told Speedy that he knew he wasn't reading the music, but to keep on doing what he was doing (hah hah).

I just recently obtained a Speedy West custom steel guitar made by the Stadler
Company. I heard a similar story involving Pete Drake. As I can't read or write music, tablature yes, notes is a big No. these stories hit closer to home than I guess I'd like. Some one said "When asked if they would like to learn to read and write music, ""As long as it doesn't hurt my playing"".6
I also heard that when asked when he (Jerry Bird) would get a new them double neck steel, Jerry replied, "When i learn to play the one I got".

I love all of these stories

Great pics Chris, looks like Leonard T. Zinn in the last picture. Is he still around, haven't seen him post or seen his name in a while. What a great man.

Yes, that's Mr. Zinn. I haven't heard/seen anything from Leonard in a while either.
BTW I have no idea what that black blotch on Speedy's shirt is. Maybe ink from the squid he had for lunch.

Cool Pictures, makes me wish I'd made a bigger effort to get to more of the St Louis steel shows though the years!
Who is that to Speedy's right in the pic with Speedy and Jerry Byrd, maybe Leon McAuliffe?

Chris,
No wrong picture, I am talking about the 3'rd one from the bottom, the tall fellow with the glasses.
