I think I'm safe in assuming that I'll never be asked to do that on a gig. If that had ever been a 'job requirement' I'd have learned to hang drywall instead.

It has to do with how much money you want to make and how far to take the sellout. So many performers are obviously talented singers and musicians, but they are also drawn to and driven by the theatrics of the Post MTV music entertainment machine.
Even Marty Stuart says one of the great things about doing what he does is wearing those gaudy clothes in front of a crowd. In Pink's case, she clearly writes the soundtrack to her visual act, as opposed to adding stage presence to her songs...like normal people  |

No. She was dancing on the side of a building. Just a wild guess, but I would say singing was probably the easy part. |

You might investigate drywall work as a backup career regardless, Roger. Y'know, if this music thing doesn't work out for ya.

I agree. Then again, the whole thing was nearly impossible, right?
I was being partially serious though, because I believe Pink certainly could have been singing live if the technology was there. But a big show like this has to be timed perfectly with no technical disruption or sound check or tuning because it is all about the illusion of flawless performance. Was there even a band there? Everything is tracked. Including lead vocals, I presume.
As one of only 3 people in the world discussing whether Pink was lip-syncing during that flying trapeze act, I think I should get back to my regularly scheduled program. |

I don't know about that but I think we're safe in making the assumption that abseiling down a building during one's performance is an 'affectation'.

| Pink is a unique talent. Writes and sings her own songs. Does acrobatics on a flying zip line in her live shows. She goes out there to impress and succeeds. Her music is not my cuppa java, but she is an excellent vocalist and a remarkable performer and there's no denying that she gives millions of people something they want and enjoy. |

I'm sure there are plenty of mothers who perform dangerous/life-threatening jobs. Not that it's required for a pop music star, but...
It SEEMS like she feels she is always fighting hard for recognition, so she seems to be going with spectacle in an effort to keep folks talking about her. And as spectacle goes, this is a whole lot more positive than the Miley Cyrus spectacle from a couple years back, or Madonna many years back.
Anyway, she is a fabulous singer, and shouldn't feel she has to do stunts to stay relevant. And on awards shows, I've always thought the bands that DON'T create a giant spectacle are the most memorable to me, because they are not putting "show" ahead of music. |
