Buddy Emmons tried both but liked the standard zum best because of it's ability to have split tuning.

In the book Mr. Zumsteg wrote “my life and the steel guitar” he clearly explains that Mr. Emmons liked the Hybrid changer “much” better then the standard version.

It's all personal choice. The hybrids are mine. And of course they have split tuning.

Which Hybrids are yours, Bobby?

Do they sound more like a P/P? Was that the idea?

Mr. Emmons may have said compensators, maybe. It's been so long since I read his post that I may have been mistaken about the split tuning. I apologize for not being able to remember exactly what the reason was, but for whatever reason, he said that he preferred the Zum with the standard changer. Evidently, he must have later changed his mind. He did once refer to the Hybrid as "an amazing machine."

Haven't played a standard Zum, but my Zum Hybrid and my p/p are very close soundwise (Wallace Trutone 17.5 k on the Zum, original Emmons on the p/p). The same kind of growl, the same "bite".

Yes, they sound more like a p/p. That was the purpose of the design. Do they sound exactly like a P/P? No, Bruce never claimed they did. But they are very close to the average Cut Tail. However, if you just have to have the p/p sound? Particularly the Bolt ON or Wrap-around. Buy a p/p. For me the convenience of end-plate tuning, A triple raise-triple lower changer and split tuning out weigh the slight difference in sound. Just my opinion.

Hybrids definitely have split tuning. What does a Hybrid Zum sound like? It sounds like a Zum.

My Hybrid is a monster in every way, I love it. It Splits and has compensators. Sounds like its own very wonderful thing. During a rough patch I had to sell some stuff...I sold my beloved 67-68 cut tail...Kept the Hybrid....no regrets.

Regards and best to all.

How much of a premium do Hybrids bring over a similar non-hybrid?

As Hybrids are not currently being made as a production item, they are valued at what the premium market will bear. Very desire-able

No Zums are being made so what was the premium when new?

Mitch your well wide of the mark on both counts !!

Buddy Emmons preferred the Hybrid over the standard, and thats what he went with !

you can put as many splits on the Hybrid as you can the standard Zum changer !

I have two Zum Hybrids - both with several splits :-}

And I am with Bobby Boggs on the comparison to a PP, but with the ease of tuning and the versatility of splits and compensators ! My two are monsters, but Big Red particularly so :-} !! (One of the last Hybrids Bruce built) - Big Red is Bruce's nickname for my guitar by the way hehe

I couldn't be any happier with my 2009 Zum Hybrid D-10. The tuning was a small learning curve but Bruce assured me once I got it dialed in I would rarely have to touch it. He was right! Transportation, weather, temperature changes never seem to affect it and it doesn't matter what amp I use with it.... It always sounds amazing and is very easy to find a great tone setting. It's lighter than other D-10s but has an incredibly "warm and rich" tone. And it plays smoother and more precise than anything I've ever owned. Bruce really got it right!
