Realized that I own a "1-Spot" adaptor that is actually rated at 1700mA. So I used that instead -- no change. Sad

Have you been using the 1-spot for the most part?

Reason I ask, not all power warts are proper for some pedals. The best adapter for the Boss is Boss.

Chips tend to go haywire with other non-Boss adapters.

If the chips are damaged, getting them fixed unless you have a donor are not easy especially since the RV3 is discontinued.

Saving grace is there are a number of them out there.

No, this is the first time I used the 1-Spot on it. But I don't have an original Boss adaptor anymore. Must have lost that one years ago... I did try a 9v Electro-Harmonix adaptor on it (200mA) and it didn't change anything.

"Boss PSA – the granddaddy. It has been proven to work flawlessly in almost any situation. Switching type adapters (1spot, Godlyke, EBS AD-9 and countless no-name ”Radio Shack/Maplin/Clas Ohlson” units) are generally more powerful for the same size, but can disturb clock chips in time-based fx pedals (chorus, delay etc)."

Might want to look for another delay pedal then if it bothers you. Unless you send it to a tech that knows what they are doing, and then the cost of all that shipping back and forth, may be cheaper to get another pedal and with the proper Boss adapter.

Yup, if the chips are damaged, the only recourse is a transplant.

Jim,
Unless I missed it, it sounds like the one thing you haven't tried yet is a fresh 9V battery. If it doesn't distort with that then, yeah, the correct Boss power supply might be the solution.

By the way Godfrey, I'm definitely gonna try your battery taping and 1/4" jack cleaning tips.

Actually with the new battery, there is less harmonic distortion than with the older, weaker battery, but it's still noticeable...

Is it an alkaline?

You could try tweaking the Balance, Tone and Delay Time knobs to "maximize" the use of this model pedal.

Might be the guitar pickup is strong for this pedal.
You mentioned putting the pedal before the VP experiencing more distortion.

Maybe turning down the tone knob might cover up that nasty harmonic you're hearing.

The RV3 tends to be a little cold sounding. These are one of the first digital delay/verb pedals made back in the 90's. And Boss was always changing things around internally.

They were harder to make back then vs today's technology like the GFI Clockwork Delay units. Butter verbs and delays.

Or even TC Electronic's TonePrint on the Hall of Fame pedal can be interfaced with a laptop/smart phone to get the sound you want by tweaking the pedal's responses via software.

Reason why older pedals have mod gurus as there's always something someone hears that they want to enhance or eliminate.

Input impedance increase and gain reduction tweaks are some of the mods players ask for on certain pedals.
