I’ve been looking for recordings or video of Ray Noren for a few years, and now, thanks to the digitalization of the Missouri TV archives, there is a segment of an Ozark Jubilee show from ‘55 with Ray.

Ray did not disappoint. Lots of bonuses here, as Red Foley’s band was Grady Martin’s Winging Strings. In the clip, Ray is playing a Rickenbacker D-8 that was modified with knee levers by Zane Beck, done in 1951.

I hope to write some more about Ray, as I have tapes of some long conversations with him. He is a unique cat!

Red Foley singing "The Birmingham Bounce". This song was written by Hardrock Gunter. He has the original recording and my uncle Billy Tucker plays fiddle on it. Also Ted Crabtree plays steel guitar. I was happy to find it on You Tube.

I really like Ray's playing. Great technique and interesting ideas, even in that short solo. His sound reminds me of Joaquin Murphey.

Good job, Mike. First time I've seen Noren and the quality is excellent.

Had to update my video downloader.

Yeah, I hear a little Joaquin in there.
