My friend has this steel that he is possibly offering to me. Looks like some 50s Ricks I've seen pics of, but this has side mounted knobs. Also trying to assess a fair value if we make a deal.
a couple of pics added
Thx!

I'm thinking a modified SW8. |

Looks like the inside neck of a DW16 that was sawn in half. Parts are worth around $250, which is about what I would offer as a player if you're okay with the looks. |

Is it possible that's a left hand guitar strung right? _________________ Don't go in the water after lunch. You'll get a cramp and drown. - Mother. |

Agree with that...they did the contouring on the inside portion after sawing it no doubt. Honestly for a hack-up-a-console job it doesn't look bad (if a little odd!).
Here's a good example of a DW16 that seems to confirm its heritage to me, anyway...

I agree it must be the inside neck of a DW16, however the contours are original. The DW16s had the contours for a few years and then they stopped, as shown in Nic's link.
Here is an early model DW16 showing the contours.

The DW16s are great sounding steel guitars. It's a shame that one was bisected but it would make a dandy S8 lap steel.
DW16s typically go for around $1200 when you can find them. I think $300ish would be a fair price for this one. |

Thanks Tim! That makes a lot more sense (most people wouldn't bother adding those contours, so it seemed a bit odd).
Vintage S8s aren't as common, so there may be more of a market there than the S6s which are much more plentiful. You might find an interested buyer just given that...most vintage 8 strings tend to be consoles... _________________ Waikīkī, at night when the shadows are falling

It looks very nice, and looks like a decent job was done finishing it. I think if I was selling, I’d want $500-$600 for it, just as a really nice “player“. Not much collector value, but I’d price it as a used 8 string with top quality hardware.
Listed on Reverb, I’d expect to see it at $600, and to see it sold there at about $500.
If I was selling it to a friend I’d take quite a bit less though, probably $300. _________________ Current Tunings:
