I have started a new line of lap steel, & sawdust is in the air. These will be affordable, but quality sound and made in USA. Making a fry pan shaped lap out of mahogany, with a Brantley Rewinds P90 Soapbar in it, in a 23 inch scale length, a 6 string at first. I have always thought the need was there for a affordable working man's lap steel, and will be just that. These will be called the V-MUSE Lap Steel - Model One.

Really great concept
USA made - get that burnt or stamped in somewhere. Crucial.
Affordable. the finish is key and parts to tempt buyers away from the Chinese imports.
Price point - Man that's going to be tough to match the chinese prices but go for it.
A cheap 6 string here from China is under £100 they even use to be as low and £60. _________________ Stefan

Good points Stefan, and I am paying attention.
Going to feature Made in USA, and good solid parts and pickup.
I know I can't compete with import prices, I can however offer a solid lap, well built with a vintage vibe & sound that will compete with any vintage lap that a player can possibly find out there. And, with this one, you can get it in your hands and step right on stage to play without having to get any repairs or work done on it that you might have to do with a vintage purchase. I am having a blast with the whole process, and looking forward to making these avail.

Beautiful but you should use your signature on the 12th fret marker. Or headstock.
I love it looking great. Keep up the build. _________________ Stefan

Good idea, but I had been asked by the buyer of #001 to please autograph his myself, so I was thinking of signing each lap personally on back of headstock. |

Love a mahogany guitar. And P90s.
And that fretboard is too cool! |

Thanks everyone for all this feedback. We put together prototype one, #000 yesterday, and it sings. When I finish the fretboard, I will post more pics.

Looking good ! The frypan shape makes sense too, and the case doesn't have to be wide etc. I can see that you are having fun !! |

I agree - the shape is very simple and functional. I often wonder why so many new lap steels have larger-than-needed guitar shaped bodies.
Sure, a lot of vintage steels had small guitar shaped bodies, but it seems like a number of today's steels are made bigger than they need to be.
small body
bigger than I like
A possible influence on the body shape? |

I wanted simple, light, functional, and wanted it to fit in a standard gig bag...and sound killer.
And it sounded great at the test run. Will get it onstage this weekend with the band.

That guitar looks great!
I personally dig the "no frills " look. I'd put in an order for one just like the proto.
don't know the price, but my first thought was that would be the perfect take anywhere lap. I'd send a pic to 'Ke Kula Mele', Alan Akaka's Hawaiian music school. I picture kids hauling that around just like a ukulele. |

Thanks again for the kind & encouraging comments everyone. And yes Ron, a simple design was my goal. I wanted as much of the natural wood to show, even to the effort with the blend in V logo on the headstock. When the fretboard is finished, we will be about to pump these out with the goal of each one being identical to the first.

I think you did a smart move with the fry-pan bodyshape. It's a bodyshape not commonly offered these days and I think players would like something a bit different than the more predominant shapes.....especially in wood. _________________ Four Pettingills and a Clinesmith Aluminum. That's true; you'd think that something that at least is shaped like the old Ricks would be more common than it is.
And make sure you use steel guitar hardware, not electric guitar stuff on the bridge for instance. |

I took the Model One prototype out for a live gig test run, and I was very happy. This is going to be everything I had hoped for in a new USA made lap steel.
