FYI

GC has a rare Rickenbacker B7 seven string lap steel for sale at their Hollywood store.

http://www.guitarcenter.com/Used/Ricken ... p-Steel.gc

Very unusual for GC to have a Rickenbacker lap steel especially a seven string. I stumbled across it surfing and thought someone here might be interested in it.

The link is dead, but a search will find it.

$1500. About right. Looks clean. They say 40's vintage, but I think it might be prewar.

Yes, it's a pre-war 7-string. They don't know a thing about it. The description just says "This product comes with a case". Rolling Eyes I would never send anyone $1500 for a 80 year old lap steel that I couldn't try before buying, and was so poorly described. Can't they at least tell us that the guitar has been tested and the electronics work fine and the tuners work fine? Those are major problem areas with these guitars.

Doug is right. GC never puts enough info on their listings. Why? 'Cause dumb-nuts buy them anyway.

In the past when I bought something from GC I always call and speak to the guitar person at the store. They often have stuff way under-priced.

Example: a Squier Stagemaster V2 bolt on neck sells for $175. The V4 with neck-through sells for $300. I have bought 2 neck-throughs from GC where they had priced them at $150. I ask the salesman if the neck is bolted on, when they say no, I buy it. If they say yes I pass. They never have a photo of the back showing the neck joint.

I have bought some amps from GC.
They will ship from one store to another at no cost.
That is a good deal when they have to be shipped from quite a ways.

They don't ship used gear for free. However, they do have a very hassle-free return policy. If you point out that it wasn't as described, they'll refund the shipping, too.

If you talk real sweet, they'll ship it for free.
I bought a 1973 Fender Vibroplus Reverb amp from them and they shipped it free. Very Happy

Maybe they did at one time, but not anymore. Pricing on vintage gear is controlled by the Hollywood store, and the local stores don't have the ability to discount it.

Might be off-topic here, so my apologies beforehand.

I go into the area's GCs less now. Their selection of vintage gear isn't what it used to be. That's because their Hollywood store gets so much of it and strictly controls pricing. I get that business reasoning but miss the selection each store used to have.

I agree. The Atlanta GC used to have a lot of vintage gear. Now not so much. You will see nice 90's stuff but 80's & earlier - nada. Now I rarely make the drive to GC Atlanta so I might have just caught them on low inventory day.

GC used to have great deals on vintage steel guitars. Like most music stores they knew nothing about steel guitars and they would underprice them. But GC smartened up and now has a vintage site listing old guitars and amps for sale (at sky high prices) ---> http://www.guitarcenter.com/Vintage/ No more deals on steels at the individual stores.

I bought a 10 string Rickenbacher at GC years ago. It had a dead pickup, but I got it at a very reasonable price. Was a very cool guitar with a bakelite body and a cast aluminum neck which was powder coated.

I'm culling the herd and may have a'37 7-string bakelite up for sale soon. It's a beautiful instrument with an abundance of "the moan." Still not sure whether it will be the Rickenbacher or a Deluxe 8 that I let go, but one of those guitars should be in the For Sale section soon along with a Dual Pro and a couple of other great instruments. If anyone wants more info they can P.M. me.

Doug is unfortunately right about GC prices today.

Case in point: http://www.guitarcenter.com/Used/Gibson/Vintage-1956-Console-Grand-Steel-CG-520-Lap-Steel.gc

At least vintage steels are still a bargain compared to vintage Spanish guitars. One example .... 1952 Fender steel versus 1952 Telecaster = huge price difference.

Not knowing a prewar bakelite from a post war instrument, is usually from places that are not into lap steels, except the Chinese types ! Very Happy

And 7-string pre-war bakelites are not really all that rare !

The Hollywood vintage room is not like the average GC store. They have several knowledgable people and techs on staff. Granted, they are not lap steel experts but they try to get the basics right. They also don't list non-operational electrics without a disclaimer.

They don't write up long descriptions - especially for vintage gear - as (if you search) they have hundreds of items posted on their site. They expect serious buyers to do what they do with vintage 6-strings: call for an in-hand description. That's normal procedure for all vintage dealers.

I don't disagree the "stores" are not very thorough but that specific department is run differently, managed by staff that fly around the world buying - sometimes selling - gear.
