Ok looking for feedback on d vs g for the first string on c6 neck. My current guitar came with d. I started playing in the early 70's when g was the norm. Now that i am really exploring jazz i miss that g for chord intervals etc.

If you have either;
1) a knee that raises <strike>4 (or 4 and 8 )</strike> 3 (or 3 and 7) to C# and P5 on the floor, or;
2) P5 on a knee and a pedal (or independently accessible knee) that raises <strike>4 or 4&8</strike> 3 or 3&7 to C#
You can get a high 5 by hitting those two changes and move the bar three frets up. At the third fret with those two changes active, you'll have FACEGACEGF.
The astute reader will notice a striking coincidence to CFACEGACEG.

Yes thatl work. But i take it you meant raise 3 & 7 a half tone?

Dave Easley uses a high G string. He is the most amazing real jazz steel player I ever heard.
I use a D string in the first spot. I miss the G mostly when I'm trying to play Don Helms kick offs.
Whatever feels natural to you should be fine.
