Just a FYI for those of you who are not that familiar with the undercarriage on these guitars, and wondered how the cross-rods attached when the guitars frame is welded and you can't remove the back apron.

There is an expansion fitting which screws into the end of the cross-rod which is then adjusted into the socket in the back apron, and locked down with a locking nut - works well but does make the removal/installation of the cross-rods a bit labour intensive.

Was this the first guitar to use square cross rods?

I have no idea Mike, although Bud Carter was involved in the development so it is possible :-}
It also has an extruded pedal bar which would have been a bit of an innovation back in 1986 ...most, if not all guitars had square stock type pedal bars back around then I think.

Hi Paddy. All the MSAs Bud made had round cross rods, and when MSA folded in '81 or 82, Bud went to work for MCI. I believe he invented the square cross rod, and all MCIs had them. but I can't say for certain.

Thanks Bobby yes it was very enjoyable and I learned quite a bit.
I must pop up a pic when I finally get a chance to take it out on a gig ... I will post up a pic or two of me playing the guitar back a few years ago too.

Had the MCI out for it's first official gig since the rebuild - a little fun New Years Eve pub gig, and it sounded and played wonderfully well - reminded me why I kept this guitar :-}

Here's a couple of better resolution photos of the finished guitar - I had it setup in my home studio and looks nice and clean and sparkling Very Happy
Incidentally the pedal bar is finished in the same combination of colours as the body of the guitar, Black front and grey on the top !!

Well, my Swedish-built AWH Viking from 1975 and my later AVM Eagle from 1979 had hex cross shafts, which served the same purpose – stopping the bell crank from slipping. I'm sure AWH steels had hex shafts from the beginning in the very early seventies.
