My first steel was a Shobud 'Crossover' D-10
2nd was a New MSA D-10 in Rosewood
next: MSA S-12 'The Universal' E9th/B6
next: Kline S-12U, red & real purtty!
next: was used as and X-tra guitar, a BMI S-10 I got to play a little show with Fred Newell with this one
Next: was a EMCI S-12U
next: Mullen S-10, rosewood I think
next: Mullen S-12U, black one, bad luck with this
one, but we won't go into that!
next: Shobud Pro 3 D-10 with metal necks
next: Emmons LeGrande II, red mica D-10
next: Kline D-10
next: Kline S-12, green I think?
next: GFI D-10 red
next: MSA S-12U, Black
next: I know I had at least 2 Shobud Mavericks
next: & lets not forget the MSA student model S-10
next: MSA 10 String [presently playing] every week
I probably had a few more that I have forgotten over the years

I have never begruged [or however you spell that] myself any of the guitars, but my wife was not always happy about them. I was under the impression that it was the guitar that made the good sound, but hell Herby Wallace, said no, its the way you hold your right hand, your bar hand, & the spot you pick in. Of course he was right & finally I was on my way to being a steel guitar player, instead of just an owner!!

Sho-Bud Maverick
MSA Red Baron
D-10 ZB
S-10 Emmons PP
Sho-Bud Pro-2 Round Front
Emmons d-10 PP
Sho-Bud Fingertip-D-10
MSA S-10
Marlen-S-10
Sho-Bud Pro-2 Custom
Mullen RP-D-10
Williams D-10.

I still have the Mullen, the Williams, and recently got seller's remorse and bought the Pro-2 Custom back. As far as what I would like to have back it would probably be the ZB and the Fingertip.

Started out with a brand new MSA Semi-Classic, 3 pedals and 1 knee. Played that for 20 years.
Bought a used BMI, 3 and 3, sold it and bought a Cougar Elite, 3 and 4. Sold it and bought a
Carter pro model single 10, 3 and four. Sold it and bought
an Excel 3 and 4, finally ordered a brand new Zum SD10, 3 and 5. I still have the Zum. While I had the Zum I bought an older MSA Classic, single 10, 3 and 4, sweet guitar. Sold it and bought a Williams 4 and 5, also a nice guitar.
Only the Zum is left. Downsized to one as I got older, playing less.

Sho-Bud Maverick--$10--3 pedals, 1 knee with coat hangar for pedal rod
Emmons student model
G.E.S. D-10
Emmons D-10, early 80s PP
Zumsteel D-10, early 80s
Emmons D-10; mid 60s bolt on, decal logo
M.S.A. D-10 Classic Supersustain

Still own:

Emmons D-10 LeGrande, Strayhorn era
Mullen D-10 HWP; late 90s.

I would love to have the M.S.A. back. It was the best sounding guitar I have ever heard ANYWHERE, & I only sold it 'cause I was facing heart surgery & not sure if I could carry the guitar. I know where it is, & the guy wants to sell it back to me, but I lost his contact info.
Would also like to have my 66 bolt on back. The M.S.A. blew it away, though.

Started on some borrowed steels (my steel and Dobro teacher leaned on his students with upgrades to loan me a guitar):
Emmons Student Model for a couple weeks.
Emmons S-10 for a month or so
Sho-Bud LDG, 3/2 changer (sweet guitar)
Then came the guitars I bought:
Marlen S-10 3/4
Emmons D-10 8/4 (I still own it, haven't seen it since 89—F*$#@ing burglars)
Zum D-10 8/7
MSA D-10 that got a neckotomy. White tidewood with black anodizing on all aluminum
MSA S-12 currently 5/5
Sho-Bud project guitar, SD-12

Starting in 1975:
Emmons Student model - S10, 3/2 (1975)
ShoBud ProI - 1975 Wood neck S10, 3/4 (1977) I miss it

ShoBud ProII - (??) Metal neck D10, 8/4 (1989)

Carter D10 - 2000 8/5 (2001)

I'm so happy with the Carter that I haven't replaced it. I have at least a dozen lap steels and resonator guitars- never sold any of 'em! I started steel on a 6 string Dobro, bought my Fender Champion in early '75 at the request of Patsy Montana.

1971 Sho Bud Professional. I wish I would have kept this one. I played acoustic instruments for 30 years then got a Stage One in 2010 and now I have a 1974 MSA single 12 5x5 which I love. Don't have the resources or desire to own every steel known to man. I'm happy with what I've got.

I've had a GFI student S10 3/4, a blue Cougar SD-10 3/4, a black Zum SD-10 3/5, a Carter "Farter", and currently a pre RP candy cane lacquer Mullen D-10 8/7. Want a good D-10 Emmons push/pull to complete the bucket list.
