| The intro to choo choo choo Boogie. Descending phrase, all at the same fret, One Note per string on two, three, four, five. Right hand. Middle, thumb, middle, thumb?. Middle, index, thumb, thumb? How would you play it? I'm just getting started and I'd like to know the accepted right hand technique before I get in too deep. Many thanks for any commentary any of you would like to provide! |

You'll likely get a variety of suggestions.
What you eventually do will depend on the size and shape of your hand. There's nothing "right" or "standard" or "normal" on this instrument!

I’m not a big fan of double-thumbing backward (descending). I think it’s bad technique and it throws my timing off. Forward double or triple thumbing is okay on adjacent strings, like a rest stroke (sweep picking) on guitar.
I’m also not a great famous pedal steel player or teacher. |

I agree the double/triple thumb descending is difficult. But then I watch Paul Franklin and Tommy White in slow motion and they do it all the time. I swear that Tommy has the fastest thumbs in the business from what I've seen (which certainly is not everything!)

| Yeah, and my personal favorite right hand guru Joe Wright is a double-thumb advocate of sorts too. I still think it’s bad technique, and not worth the time working out the bugs in it, afaic. |
