screen password stopped working

The screen password for my Toshiba laptop has stopped working. That is to say that I cannot log in to use the computer. When the password is entered it will not accept it saying the computer is offline and to use the password that I used previously. Could this be virus related? Does anyone have suggestions for getting into the computer? Once in I can change to a new password and do a virus scan.
