I originally posted this in Tabs, but I think I can get more response here.

Is there a list of songs that are in the B11 setup? Seems I saw a posting on the Forum addressing this question but I cant find it.
What lends a song to the B11 tuning? It has the A6 on the top four strings, but the bottom four seem rather strange to most melody lines (IMO).
I have one of my non-pedal steels set up for B11 but need more material.
Thanks for any info.

Yes, A6 on the top 4 strings, but if you SKIP string 1 the rest of the tuning is B9 (and B7). There is a big, rich 9th chord built into the tuning. It's a great tuning for songs with 7th chords IMO.

Here is some basic B11 chord info. I posted on this forum five years ago ---> http://bb.steelguitarforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=169521&highlight=b11

I will have B11 tablature for Sand, Mapuana, and How D'Ya Do in my next song book/CD. It should be ready in early 2015.

Also, check out Margie Mays' live performance of Echoes of the South Pacific on B11:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yhFsXcumngQ&feature=youtu.be

David Stewart has TABLATURE for the song here ---> http://www.steelc6th.com/tabs/echoes_of_the_south_pacific.htm

Jerry Byrd had made a listing of all his hand-written tabs one could order, that shows the tunings too.

Scotty at one time had that list, am I correct?

I think I saw the list that Scotty had a couple years or so ago. I just checked the Scotty's site and it is no long showing.

Is anyone selling Jerry Byrd's tabbed material? It would be a shame to have all Jerry's work unavailable to the steel community!!!

I would think any song could be played in any tuning with proper practice. Why not choose the songs you want to learn and figure out where they are on the fretboard using that tuning?

Here is an OLD listing of Scotty's JB Pro arrangements. Tab handwritten by Jerry, extremely advanced, difficult arrangements, lots of fills mixed in with the melody, reverse slants, etc.

I don't know if these are still available from Scotty's Music, and the prices shown would certainly be outdated. The list is interesting because it shows the TUNINGS that Jerry used to play the songs.

There are a number of B11 songs in the inventory. I'll contact Scotty's to see what the availability is...or who now has the inventory.

I think Scotty increased the price of all the #1- #200 tunes to $5.00 each some time ago. I may be wrong.

All hand written by JB himself! Even the list is hand written.

#1-200 List I got from Scotty's many years ago, hence the low prices. The C diatonic songs at the Bottom I added to the list a few years later, hence the higher prices for those. I ordered a dozen arrangements a few years ago, and they are written exactly as Jerry played them, every slant, slide, fill, etc. Definitely not for beginners or intermediate players. Kind of frustrating trying to play, actually. I found myself simplifying some of the sections because there were so many ornate fills mixed in with the melody it was kind of hard to follow. No audio included, although most of the songs are on Jerry's albums.

I have a version of Tenderly, which is essentially my estimation of how Noel Boggs could have played it on B11. There is string pulling behind the bar to get certain other chords:

Would recommend emailing Scotty's son via the address here:
http://www.scottysmusic.com/

Assuming you meant those JB tabs...

Old thread but to throw my 2 cents in...some songs are just "not quite right" in anything but B11 I think. The two Iona numbers Sand and How D'ya Do (or How'd Ya Do, however it is correctly spelled...some controversy about this I gather) as well as Mapuana as mentioned above. Hana / Paradise Found is another natural fit. My teacher taught me Lehuanani (by D Kupele) in B11.

Oh, and from the Tapa Room Tapes, I'm almost entirely convinced Jules plays In A Little Hula Heaven in B11.

AFAIK, the key thing of the tuning is to have the upper A6 style melody space...plenty of rooms for double stop progressions with the 5th on top...with the lower tuned counterpoint of 9th chords (with dom 7). It's those 9th chords you can interweave with the melody that gives it that smokey, jazzy sense of the exotic. I love the tuning (for all the songs above) but honestly I'm not at the point of familiarity with it where I can just jam on it freely...C6/C13 I'm more in that space, but B11, I can get lost very quickly. It really feels like two tunings on one neck, A6 / B9! A similar analogue in C6 world is C6 / A7...effectively very similar, although lacking the 9th, not quite as jazzy IMO.

Great, thanks for the info. Yes, I meant the JB tabs. I didn't know there was still someone manning the shop. I sent an email as you suggested. I had bought the JB course a couple of years ago when I first started learning, but it took a while for my ability to catch up with the course and realize how much I like the arrangements in the course. Now I want more, of course.

It's a really good book , and oddly, Andy, I was looking through it last night! nice work.

Anyone wanting to get familiar with this tuning would benefit from this book. Another that helps is Doug Beaumier's book with C6, A6 and B11 arrangements.

As we know, one set of strings can do all 3 tunings on a 6 string.

Andy's book is all B11, though.

In a way, that's how I see it. You have your usual A6 on top, the (h-l) E-C#-A-F#, and you have a B9 on all the strings but the high E. This is for the 6 string version.

It's harder to play all the octave runs that are OK in A6, but the added chords instantly under the bar make it worthwhile. Anyway, I'm still learning what B11 can do.

Here are some tunes I play in the original keys (based on available sheet music and song collections) on the B11th which gives fat chords for chord melody style on many old standards:

Moonlight in Vermont
Old Cape Cod
Theme from "Picnic"
Unforgettable
Blue Velvet
Prisoner of Love
How Deep is the Ocean?
Just One More Chance
I'm A Fool To Care
I Love You So Much It Hurts Me
East Of The Sun
Girl From Ipanima
Nuages
Once In A While
One Song (from "Snow White")
Out of Nowhere
Peg O' My Heart
Pretend You Don't See Her
The One Rose
To Each His Own
Tumblin' Tumbleweeds

Also some Italian flavored pop songs (I grew up in The Bronx):

Inamorata
Ciao, Ciao, Bambina
Al Di La
Anima E Core

I find B11th to be a great companion to C13th.
