Bobbe, you are right this is a great fourm. Just because some steel guitar shops pay business taxes and pay for a business phone does not make them a factory. It makes them a business.

The American Heritage Dictionary defines a factory as a building or group of buildings were goods are manufactured. By that defination every stee guitar builder has a factory.

Are children considered goods. If so I have a child factory. Ya buddy.

The teacher is in.

FWIW, there are many advantages, tax wise, in running a business/factory out of your home. A possible disadvantage to a non-factory establishment (in your home deal) is the absence of that big desk where one's arm can quickly clear the desktop for a little afternoon break. Doing that at work (at the factory) can only make you liable for a future harassment suit and higher workers comp fees especially when the victim falls of the desk and breaks a finger nail!

Aren't we just discussing semantics here?
I don't see the point, whether or not a pedal steel is made in a "factory" or someone's backyard garage/outbuildings or
in their basement.

Maybe the point is, 'how soon can the instrument be completed and delivered'?

As long as the quality and craftsmanship, playability etc. is there [and Lord knows it is], then that's all I really care about.

Well...here I go again. I'm going to skip Webster's first definition under the word "factory", 'cause it has more to do with a structure or building than anything else.

HOWEVER, the second entry under "factory" is very enlightening, even to an old bookworm/geezer like me! It says...
Quote:
...any place producing a uniform product, without concern for individuality...
Sooooo...we can say (or rather I can say) that if you make a "standard model" steel...or anything else, buddy, you got a factory! Now if everyone you build is different, and if everyone you build is customized, and you never build one without an "order", unless it's for yourself...then I guess it's safe to say you don't have a "factory".

Guess what, I just solved the dilemma we were having!

Thusly, I can say with some confidence that 99.99% of all steels that have ever been built (or will be built) were built in a "factory"!

I'm glad I could help!

Joe M. , the reason I get 95 responses and you would get 4 is because I know a lot more about the subject than you do. Right? What do I do for a career? What do you do for a career?
I don't think being famous has anything to do with it. I'm not sure I'm famous anyway.I met a guy two years ago from Pago Pago that wasn't sure if he knew me or not. (his wife did though!) How famous do YOU think I am?
I don't think I'm very famous. Maybe I am in Panama. I did a show there once in 1948 with my uncle Doug in the high school. We twerld ropes (larietts) , he played steel guitar with the Fox Hunters and did comedy. I just did the "Cowboy stuff". I lost in a tractor driving contest in Panama once also. I was only 6 years old,

(this response was all in fun Joe, don't get your Panama ire up)

Bobbe--You know a lot more than me because Uncle Doug got you started. I was stuck with Lloyd Nollinger and the E-harp. As far as being famous in Panama, no one remembers you. I have recently played at the Lakewood Legion, the Westfield Moose, the Warren Eagles, and the Big Tree. Everyone knows me and Uncle Doug but not YOU. Uncle Doug has been helping me and I'm improving. In a couple of months I'll be ready for a face-off at the Stedman Grange! We will let Uncle Doug and Billy Cole be the judges--you know they will be fair. Joe
P.S. I have never TWIRLED a LARIAT!
