| Well, I've just spent about another hour trying to get the chimes part BE did on the song on the end of the intro and break. I've been watching Larry Sasser play the same lick and I still don't have it. I've tried it off and on since 1971 and the Sho-Bud instruction album with Neil Flanz. This is the only lick I hadn't been able to learn correctly in all of these years. Maybe somebody can do a video showing the lick like BE did it in 1956, I think it was. Thanks. 43 years is a long time to be stumped by something that looks so easy. But!! |

| Billy, I have admired your picking for years. I too await a logical explanation on this one. The rest of the song seems to all fall into place with the riffs and positions I have learned thru the years. But, that chiming in the intro is challenging. I have tried different placement of the right hand and chiming with the B&C (which will get you by) but I can't get that correct two note chimes on the last two chimes (there is only 3). I've tried it over and over with the song and thought that surely after trying all the combinations I know that it would come up. But it hasn't happened for me yet either. Maybe Buddy will explain it since it is probably a short answer. |

Thanks for that link, Frank. And kudos to Greg Cutshaw for nailing "Half A Mind." Love the three string slant with the A & B pedals.
By the way, "A Trip In The Country" is long out of print, and used copies tend to be quite pricey. The good news is, most (if not all) of the original album is available on the CD entitled "Best Of Roger Miller, Volume One: Country Tunesmith." It is also out of print, but you can find used CDs on Amazon, or downloads of all 21 tracks for $9.49. Anyone who is into the "Big E" (and who isn't?) should hear these tunes. |

If you are talking about the 1958 Ernest Tubb version of this song, the steel player was Bobby Garrett, not Buddy.
Email me and I will send you the tab for the intro, with the chimes. Can send you a sound clip of it as well as the steel break tab and sound clip, if you want them.

Graham, the 1958 version was Buddy, not Bobby, and he played it on a Sho~Bud guitar. I got this from the Man himself. I always thought it was on his Bigsby, but Buddy told me last year that it was cut on a 'Bud.

Thanks, Herb. The players name was supplied to me by a player whose name I won't mention here when I first put the intro and break sound clips and tabs on my Rebelâ„¢ & Ricky website. Ricky Davis did the tab for both.

Buddy cut Half a Mind on a d-8 Sho-Bud, That guitar was
the 2nd one built, Mine was the next or 3rd one.Jimmy Day got #1
Buddy's top string was an E [No high Gsharp above the E]
The 4th note of the Intro was a right slant on strings
1 2 3 with A pedal down,Buddy used a lot of slants back then! If any of you have the double album [The Ernest Tubb Story] Check out his slants on [Slippin Around} buddy & Billy Byrd made this album the best of any at that time! |

| 10th fret still a problem. Can't get the harmonics there but can get them like I've been doing at the 8th fret and press BA pedals to finish in A. Got to be missing something to do with the 10th fret harmonics. I'll see if I can find a video of someone playing the harmonics. Got to be simple! |

I am also in the list of people who have been trying to get this lick correct for a large number of years, in fact was working on it again just a couple days ago. For those interested there is a utube of Buddy playing it at the Ernest Tubb Midnight show behind Cal Smith or Johnny Bush and it shows very clearly how he does it. I still can't do it. This has evaded me for years and I will not give up. Sometimes I can do it close but never get the cigar.

Lee, yes it is Bronze colored. I actually bought this Ritt from Bobbe Seymour several years ago, after seeing a picture of it on the Steel Guitar Nashville web site. I believe at that time Bobbe was a Rittenberry Dealer.
Bobbe told me that Gary built the guitar for himself and kept it at his church most of it's life. After a couple of years I sold it to my buddy Mike Archer.
I liked the way it stayed in tune, was light weight and had a good tone. I never saw another Ritt that color.....thanks for asking. |

It's been decades since I've heard (or played) that song, but I don't remember having that much difficulty with the harmonics...

Barry I would but I can't find it myself. I looked this morning. I may have it saved somewhere but who knows. I will continue to look for it.
If you don't have a problem with the harmonics then you are way ahead of some of us and that is a good thing. |

The original is in Ab.
So put your bar on the 4th fret of your e9 pedal steel and chime this Tab>

To chime two strings at once; is a quick light rake across the two strings.
I position the side tip of my third finger over the frets and strings to chime; and position my thumb/pick behind and below that third finger to strum/rake the strings. It looks very similar to the technique of Chiming that Roger Kelly displayed on his youtube video above.

As for the solo; after I do some more work on these back up of sho~buds I have here; with a broken thumb..ha...; I'll put it up if ya'll reckon you could use it.?
My Good friend Graham(Rebel)Reed offered to email those tabs and sound clips....and that is mighty mighty kind of him...I'm only jumping in here; because I did not tab is EXACTLY; only very close and easier to play if you are not a veteran pro. Roger Kelly did a heck of a good job on it.
