OK, so Roger Linn was famous for making a (real-ish) synthesizer/sequencer/drum machine. Then he made the AdrenaLinn I, II and III, which are filter/sequencer devices you can plug a guitar (or steel guitar) into and it will process it to sound like a synthesizer/sequencer/drum machine.

So he invented something that makes a steel guitar sound like a synthesizer, and now he's invented a synthesizer that sounds like a steel guitar. When you connect the dots, you... ummm. Well, yes. Super! Time marches on, and fruit flies like bananas.... :| Which do I buy first? OoooWee, better buy them BOTH, I wouldn't want to get LEFT BEHIND!!! :whoa:

Seriously, it's totally stiff and lifeless. But maybe someone will come along who will practice long and hard enough to make it sound fluid enough to be tolerable and can then start fooling some of the people some of the time.

Oh, and they do say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, so thanks Rog, on behalf of steelers everywhere.

I don't think anyone pretends they are hearing a pedal steel, but come on guys...if the history of the search for ways to trigger or create sound for music was left to you guys we'd still be shaking gourds, banging sticks together, and howling at the moon!

He smiles because he didn't have to take the time to practice and actually learn how to play an instrument.
I frickin' HATE robots.

Yawn.

30+ years ago they said they'd replace guitars with synths - you can see that really took off and killed the guitar industry.

My opinion - if it was straightforward to get the bent-string figures to sound reasonable, more people would glom onto this. But anybody who practices that kind of stuff long enough to make it sound decent could (IMO) learn to do it on a real guitar even better. I just don't see the point unless you are, perhaps, just into synths.

Now, if he could get this into a smartphone app, it would probably take off. I don't think it would even have to be that good - I don't know what it is, but a lot of people will do incredibly stupid stuff on a phone just for the sake of doing it on a phone.

As far as pedal steel people being luddites, I don't agree. It's a relatively sophisticated instrument, very far from gourds, banging sticks, and howling at the moon.

LOL. But oh yeah, to a lot of rockers, Jerry IS pedal steel. But somehow, I can't picture Jerry or his followers taking to a gizmo like this in favor of the real thang.

How 'bout dat...His smile at the end is due to him hearing the sound of the UPS truck slowing down to deliver his Ebay student model steel and BIG Tuning Wrench! ;-)
p.s. He's probably sounding better than my first go at steel...just sayin'

I'm glad that Mr. Linn feels steel guitar is important enough to create this. I don't think the Linn drum put drummers out of work, although it got some high profile recording gigs.

Maybe this will catch on....

Thus the reference to Jerry. But, it could have been Toy Caldwell too.

I actually like Jerry's playing. Can't say the same for Toy.

Wow! You're lucky. The UPS drivers speed up and throw the steel guitar out of the truck here.

So how many years would a person have to practice on that thing before an artist would want it in the studio. A lot longer than Garcia spent on a real steel I'm sure.

EDIT: And it won't help a bit for Roger to learn "Puttin' On The Ritz".So there!

He forgot about his Tempered Tuning. Other than that, well it would still sound like CRAP.
