My D-10 is an older one though retrofitted with BCT. I noticed that newer ones have a metal rear apron while mine is wood. I assume this was done to reduce weight. Does it effect anything else? My piggybank is too small to hold enough to purchase a second one to do an A/B comparison. Just curious.

Hi Jan -
Not sure why it was changed. I've never actually seen a Carter with a wood rear apron but it appears to me that any upgrade or modification that involve the cross shafts is simplified with the all metal rear apron. ie: adding a pedal or knee lever. Mine has the all metal rear apron and it looks like it would be easy to do an upgrade although I have not done anything to mine. I'm not 100% sure but I think most Sierra guitars have an all metal rear apron as well.

Sierra's are made of aluminum (except for the neck). The rear apron is metal.
Maybe John or Ann will answer the Carter question.

I believe that Carter guitars changed from installing a wood rear apron to the aluminum rear apron so that they could increased the overall resonance.

how about ease of repair.. cross shafts can be easly removed and or replaced...i'm working on a old msa that bud had final inspection on and basicly..it's the same system
