I will chime in and say that I had this guitar last year. I received it basically a basket case with an unusual tuning setup with 4 pedals and 3 knees. A previous owner had used a lithium grease type of lubricant which gummed up all the undercarriage and cross shafts and it had a negative impact on the finish of the underside of the body. I completely dismantled the guitar, cleaned and polished all parts, sanded and re-lacquered the underside of the body, made new pull rods, added new bell cranks, and reassembled and lubed all the parts. I then did some trading with a close friend and forum member who actually did the rodding and setup on this Fessy. The serial number sticker was torn and had to be removed when I sanded the body. I wrote the number in black marker and applied another coat of lacquer. I didn't allow enough drying time and the marker smeared a little with the next coat. Two of the pedals have a corner cut on them and I received it this way. I was told that a previous owner did this so as not to accidentally touch the next pedal when engaging. I was told he got that idea from John Hughey doing the same early on in his career. Don't know if that is accurate or not. But the person I purchased it from purchased it from the family of a deceased player.
The pickup is an early model 712 and wound to 28K if memory serves me correctly. I will say that this is a fine steel and it plays very well with amazing tone and sustain. I would compare the tone of the pickup with the original 705 and it's very easy to make changes on the guitar. I don't think anyone getting this steel will be disappointed!!!
